Outbound

This noon finds us rounding Cape Henry at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay, heading south. Just in time, it’s getting chilly here!

The sailing is delightful. Twelve knots of wind from the ENE giving us an easy, fast run around Cape Hatteras. Cape Henry has a pair of lighthouses. The older one was one of the first construction projects approved by the United States government under its new constitution in 1792. The newer, larger light was completed in 1881, and is still an active navigation aid.

The old, and the newer, lighthouses at Cape Henry.

Our plans have shifted a bit. The boat I was scheduled to meet for a delivery to the Caribbean needs some major repairs, so that project is postponed a bit. Instead of stating in North Carolina for a few weeks, we are now headed straight down to Brunswick, GA where Harmonie will be docked for 6 to 8 weeks.

We are sailing in the middle of a huge flock of sailboats who are making their southbound trip as part of the Salty Dawg Rally. Most of them commanded by new and inexperienced sailors looking for safety in numbers. Many are bright shiny new boats, sailed almost comically badly. Everybody has to start somewhere…
